Datarwe is proud to announce a groundbreaking collaboration with Queensland Health to validate the first Nursing Acuity Dashboard. Designed with and for clinicians, this innovative tool leverages live clinical data to provide real-time indicators of unit “busyness” and patient demand through a resource intensity score. Using Datarwe’s Clinical Data Nexus platform capabilities, this initiative holds the potential to offer a more systematic understanding of workload parameters, facilitating improved resource allocation decisions in the healthcare sector.
Queensland Health endorse dashboard validation
Queensland Health stands out as one of the busiest health sectors in Australia, ranking third nationally in the number of ICU beds. Now, through a forward-thinking, state-endorsed innovation initiative, Queensland Health is supporting the development of a cutting-edge Nursing Acuity Dashboard designed to transform ICU workflow efficiency. This is not a research project, but a practical, collaborative effort that harnesses existing data and advanced analytics to improve both patient care and staff resource management in real time.
Intensive Care Unit
A Real-Time Indicator of ICU “Busyness”
The Nursing Acuity Dashboard leverages secure, live clinical data to estimate the approximate and relative clinical demand of each patient, updated in real time. Continuous data are extracted, encrypted, de-identified, and labelled in a protected private cloud environment endorsed by eHealth. Through sophisticated data analytics, each patient is assigned a Resource Intensity Score (RIS), giving clinicians a comprehensive overview of the unit’s operational demand per bed, pod, and entire unit.
Nurse-Led Design and Deployment
The Acuity Score has been co-designed and fine-tuned in collaboration with nurses, ensuring it directly addresses the needs of those on the frontline. Nurse Unit Managers and team leaders can use these insights to:
Assign appropriate nurse-to-patient ratios at the start of each shift
Streamline bed management and patient flow
Delegate staff effectively, pairing experienced nurses with higher-acuity patients
Track length of stay and resource intensity trends over time
Secure and Approved Data Usage
This project’s use of de-identified clinical data from the Queensland Health state-wide archive, accessed via Datarwe’s Clinical Data Nexus platform, is endorsed and approved by the Clinical Excellence and Innovation Commission in Queensland Health and the Queensland Intensive Care Network (QICN). The dashboard is a direct outcome of the Precision Medicine Data Platform project, part funded by Advance Queensland, Queensland Health and commercial partners.
